Back in 1999, when “Boondock Saints” came and went (after appearing in a handful of theaters), the odds of ever seeing a sequel to the movie were incalculably low. And, as time went by, the odds grew even longer.

But “Boondock Saints” is not your average movie — and “Boondock Saints” fans are far from your average fans. Director Troy Duffy had a vision to get a sequel made … and in 2009, that movie blazed its way inter theaters.

The two “Saints” — played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus — were completely on board with reprising the roles of Conner and Murphy McManus, even if it seemed (at times) like it might never happen.

Old Testament Vengeance With A Twist ...

A decade later, the cult classic The Boondock Saints finally spawns a sequel: All Saints Day. It’s a violent, profane gun battle from beginning to end, pitting the brothers McManus, Conner and Murphy (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), against the forces of evil(er) in Boston, Massachusetts. The pair is again joined by their father, Noah (Billy Connolly), and a rough-riding gang of associates that includes Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) and Special Agent Eunice Bloom (Julie Benz). What results is a bloodbath of humorous witticisms and gags, the violence balanced by the way that the actors play it straight… while playing it sideways.

After a priest is gunned down by an evil gunman who frames the brothers for the murder, the family returns from their hideout in Ireland to clear their name and rid Boston of evil. Usually sequels come out because a film was a smash hit in one form or another, but in this case most viewers probably never even heard of the original film. While a cult classic, The Boondocks Saints didn't exactly knock 'em dead at the box office, but that doesn't mean that this sequel requires viewing of the previous film.

Creating a cult classic: Scene interviews Troy Duffy of 'The Boondock Saints'

The Irish Catholic, vigilante killers of “The Boondock Saints” are back — and they paid a visit to Catholic Disneyland, too. The film’s creator and one of its stars visited Notre Dame’s campus Tuesday evening for several events to promote the release of the new movie.

A lucky 200 students got to see “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” the sequel to the 1999 cult classic. Tickets for the free Tuesday night showing at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center’s Browning Cinema were snapped up instantly, but an overflow of campus enthusiasm and online support convinced distributor Apparition to open the movie the South Bend-Mishawaka area this weekend.

Yes, this interview begins with a rather adolescent take on our site's good name, and it ends with a laugh, so you know you're dealing with a filmmaker who knows how to have a good time.

That filmmaker is Troy Duffy, who became a household name in Tinseltown when Miramax paid the Boston bartender $450,000 to write and direct his debut film with a budget of $15 million dollars, making him the kind of rags-to-riches success story the media revels in. That was 1997. Two years later, the film had been completed for less than half that budget and without the participation of Miramax, who had pulled out due to creative conflicts with Duffy. The independent distributor who purchased the movie The Boondock Saints barely released it in theaters and it marched solemnly to the direct-to-video graveyard.

Typically, this is where the Wikipedia entry ends, possibly with addendums like "Troy Duffy has not been interviewed since 1999, and currently works as a bartender in Boston."
