Boondock Saints (review)

Back when I was teaching college freshmen writing, I would often assign a paper in which students had to write about a movie (a review, an overview of critical reception, genre analysis, etc.) and I noticed that every semester, at least a couple of the young men would pick Boondock Saints for their subject. I'd never heard of the movie, probably because it got a very small theatrical release here in the States, but it became a cult hit on DVD and the freshmen boys loved it. I found over the years that my ... READ MORE

TeenInk: Review of Boondock Saints 2 All Saints Day

“There are two kinds of people in this world when you all boil it down, you got your talkers and you got your doers. Most people are just talkers all they got is talk but when all is said and done it’s the doers that change this world, and when they do that they change us, and that’s where we never forget them. So which one are you, do you just talk about it or stand up and do something about it, because believe you me all the rest of it is just coffee house BS,” (Boondock Saints 2 All Saints Day) that about tells you what the story is about if you haven’t seen the first movie that’s all you have to fall back on... The Boondock Betties: Review: Boondock Saints – “The Lost Gig”

The boys are back! AND THEY'REON A BOAT!

“The Lost Gig” is a 10 page vignette written by Troy Duffy and J.B. Love.

The teaser takes place in 1999, in between two pivotal points in the storyline. Anyone who has seen the movie remembers this scene. Rocco and the boys are sitting in the car outside of the strip club. Rocco announces that he knows all there is to know about the baddies in Boston and the three of them can clean house. After Connor announces his strange comfort with... READ MORE

Boondock fans had to wait ten long years for a sequel to the cult favorite film. THESTALLIONONLINE: REVIEW -- A sequel there shall be with 'All Saints Day'

There's nothing like a good cult classic to get people together, and "Boondock Saints: All Saint's Day" is perfect if you're ready for a little gratuitous violence.

When a Catholic priest's cold-blooded murder is made to look like the work of the Saints, the two brothers come out of seclusion in Ireland to correct the wrongdoing. With the help of their father and a new Mexican ally who takes the place of Rocco, they continue their work of removing corrupt mobsters from the streets. Meanwhile, the same three Boston cops and a sharp, sultry Southern detective are hot on their tails... READ MORE

The Saints Return…With a Vengeance: An Interview with Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Their Fans

Ten years ago, director Troy Duffy went from just another LA bartender to Hollywood’s next big thing to sleeping one off on someone else’s floor. His script for The Boondock Saints was hot, attracting the backing of the Weinsteins with names like Ewan McGregor and Stephen Dorff up for parts. Then, depending on who you hear the story from (former friends, emphasis on the “former”, chronicle their take in the 2003 documentary Overnight), Duffy pissed a lot of people off and Columbine happened; nobody wanted anything to do with his stylized and glorified vigilante movie anymore. It was probably a bit of both. Still, Duffy kept at it, managing a practically-straight-to-video release from Franchise Pictures (excepting a brief five screen release rumored to be paid out of his own pocket).

Critics panned it across the board… READ MORE

TheTrades: DVD Review: The Boondock Saints II...

To coin a phrase, "The Boondock Saints" took the world by drizzle in 1999. The storm would come later. It was initially released to only a handful of theaters do to the Columbine shootings. It's a shame that such a fun film got locked away and killed (so to speak) due to some bizarre connection an overly cautious executive made between a violent movie and a violent real-life incident, even though violence was the only common denominator. Fortunately, the DVD caught on by word of mouth and has become a best-selling cult classic. That's how I discovered it, perusing the racks at my local video store for a fun film to watch on a boring-but-required overnight shift at a previous job. I had several hours of downtime and would bring movies to pass the time. I saw Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery on the cover, looking grim and cool. I recognized Flanery from "Suicide Kings," but I must admit I... READ MORE

FernbyFilms : Movie Review – The Boondock Saints

I remember the first time I saw it. You probably do to. That moment, when you watched The Boondock Saints and wondered how on Earth you’d missed it. It was probably recommended to you by a friend, somebody to whom a film such as this might appeal. Somebody with a slightly skewed cinematic radar, who appreciates all manner of film treats whether they be high art or complete trash. You probably only ever gave it a cursory glance at first, passing it off as a no-brand film that you’d never heard of, instead preferring to again watch The Matrix or Star Wars. But the hearty recommendation from your friend, plus the rather adult rating on the cover, indicated to you that it could, in fact, be a ton of bloody, violent fun... READ MORE

The “Boondock Saints” franchise has seen a lot of action over the past few months, beginning with the release of “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” the highly-anticipated follow up to the 1999 original.

Washburn Review: Boondock Saints 2—cult classic

In 1999, “The Boondock Saints” was released in Germany, Greece, Denmark and Finland. January 21, 2000, it hit the United States in a limited release. Ten years after the release, and after a cult following demanded a sequel, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” premiered in the United States.

The release hit only 67 theaters nationwide. However, after a March 9, 2010 release on single disc DVD and Blu-Ray, allowing those who couldn’t see the film in theaters or on bootleg Web sites to get their first glimpse.

The sequel takes place eight years after fraternal twins Conner and Murphy MacManus (played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) and their father massacred mob boss Yakaveta. The trio are living in exile on a sheep farm in Ireland when they get word that someone has framed them for the murder of a Catholic priest back in Boston. The twins, who set out in the... READ MORE

NoticeEverything: Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Tonight I watched the very belated sequel of the cult classic "Boondock Saints", known as "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day".

I adored the original movie, not because of the violence or "cool" factor necessarily, but more for the idea behind it (and the two hot friggin' guys). Everyone aged a decent amount for the sequel (shit, Sean Patrick Flannery's face looks plain swollen for some reason), but I loved that they put all the original cast members in the roles that everyone originally loved them for. ItsJustMovies: An Exclusive Interview with Norman Reedus

– by SEAN GERSKI –

Back in 1999, when “Boondock Saints” came and went (after appearing in a handful of theaters), the odds of ever seeing a sequel to the movie were incalculably low. And, as time went by, the odds grew even longer.

But “Boondock Saints” is not your average movie — and “Boondock Saints” fans are far from your average fans. Director Troy Duffy had a vision to get a sequel made … and in 2009, that movie blazed its way inter theaters.

The two “Saints” — played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus — were completely on board with reprising the roles of Conner and Murphy McManus, even if it seemed (at times) like it might never happen.

Reedus said he never gave up faith in the sequel — but still was a bit shocked when they ... READ MORE

A Boston mob hires a hitman to kill a church-attending priest in a framejob similar to executions The Saints would perform. Knowing they've been sent a message, The Saints return to Boston from their discrete new lives for some blood thirsty payback.

Standouts:
What stands out the most in this movie is the frequent amount of comedy used. The first Boondock Saints was something of a dark comedy-action as well, but this sequel has a much higher laugh ratio. This film is almost as much a bro-mance comedy as it is a shoot-em-up action film.

Something else that stood out was the ending. The last scene of the film is memorable and exciting, ... READ MORE

DVDTalk - Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

The Movie

Sequels are often times not nearly as good as the first film in a franchise, but there have been exceptions to that rule. See Terminator 2 and The Godfather Part 2 for just a couple examples but they had something working in their favor that Boondock Saints II does not. While T2 came close; it didn't have ten full years in between the original film and the sequel. It doesn't seem to matter in this case though because Boondock Saints has built such a cult following that most fans have literally been watching it on a loop just hoping that one day a sequel would arrive. Well, it finally has and here it is for me to review... READ MORE

Old Testament Vengeance With A Twist ...

Boondock Saints II: All Saints DayA decade later, the cult classic The Boondock Saints finally spawns a sequel: All Saints Day. It’s a violent, profane gun battle from beginning to end, pitting the brothers McManus, Conner and Murphy (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), against the forces of evil(er) in Boston, Massachusetts. The pair is again joined by their father, Noah (Billy Connolly), and a rough-riding gang of associates that includes Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) and Special Agent Eunice Bloom (Julie Benz). What results is a bloodbath of humorous witticisms and gags, the violence balanced by the way that the actors play it straight… while playing it sideways.

After a priest is gunned down by an evil gunman who frames the brothers for the murder, the family returns from their hideout in Ireland to clear their name and rid Boston of evil. Some of the same characters return, like the trio of cops who might as well be the Three Stooges, or the various men who ran with the brothers in the original. Other pieces of the puzzle which .. The Blast Interview: The cast of Boondock Saints II...

I came across “The Boondock Saints” the same way everybody who wasn’t a Hollywood insider in the late 90’s did. A friend handed me the DVD in middle school and said, “Dude, you have to watch this.” I did, and like so many others, I adored it. It’s an entertaining film about two Irish brothers on a mission of divine justice that was made for a budget third of Joe Mauer’s annual salary and has since gone on to become the biggest cult film in decades. The word of mouth campaign that helped the film achieve its status and its complete rejection by the mainstream film industry has created an ardent fan base that has developed a special relationship with the film and anxiously waited 10 years for last November’s sequel, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.”

In congruence with the sequel’s release on Blu-Ray/DVD, some of the franchise’s most notable figures embarked on a 10th Anniversary Tour, including a stop in... READ MORE

FilmArcade - "The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day" Blu-Ray Review by Anthony T

Even though it’s been ten years since Troy Duffy directed a film, he still hasn’t lost his touch to create a kick ass action film. “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” improves on the original and then some. Duffy does a good job making a sequel that contains the elements that made the original so enjoyable, while adding new things to the mythology. He does a great job making the action scenes entertaining and full of adrenaline and intensity. Not a lot of action films can do that, because most action directors think that explosion sequences bring intensity to the scene. Wrong, it’s the fight sequences along with the way that those scenes are edited is what makes it intense. What also makes the direction good, the way that Duffy handles everything from the flashbacks to the acting of the film. I liked how he uses multiple elements very well, as this... READ MORE

J! Ent - The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (a J!-ENT Blu-ray Disc Review)

“The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” is literally an adrenaline pumping, action-packed, kick ass film which I found much better than the first and literally had a lot of fun watching it.

What I find interesting is that “The Boondock Saints” was a film that didn’t even have a chance for a theatrical release but found a humongous cult following on video. And here we are with the sequel, the critics obviously share a different opinion towards this film but among the viewers, they loved the film. As for me, I really enjoyed the film and felt this Blu-ray release is awesome!

I enjoyed the addition of the new... READ MORE

Sophomore scenarist & director Troy Duffy has revived Connor and Murphy MacManus for his ultra-violent but often riotous sequel “The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day.” If you missed the original , these two Irish-American brothers who worked in a meat packing factory decided to arm themselves with a pair of silenced automatic pistols and imitate Charles Bronson’s “Death Wish” antics. In their case, the MacManus twins believed God had summoned them to serve as his avengers. BlogCritics - Blu-ray Review:The Boondock Saints II: All Saint's Day

Expectations were high. After 10 years, the much-anticipated sequel to the cult classic Boondock Saints finally crawled out of development hell, made it to the big screen and now onto Blu-ray. The buzz around the sequel, however, seemed largely fan-generated, and hopes were high that this sequel, likely too late, would live up to the original.

Personally, I was skeptical. It's incredibly difficult to imagine a follow-up that could do the original justice, and since this movie had been in the works for so long (heck, there was some speculation that it was going to come out in 2005) that I was afraid that it would, frankly, not be very good. My hopes were sparked, however, when it was ... READ MORE

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Review

The sequel to the cult crime drama is just as self-indulgent on Blu-ray.

by Cindy White
View all 6 images

March 8, 2010 - Writer/director Troy Duffy revisits the ultra-violent world of the MacManus brothers in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, a longshot sequel that many fans of the 1999 original never thought they'd actually get. The sequel opens with the execution of a Boston priest in a manner that makes it look like the handiwork of the long-missing vigilante siblings Murphy (Norman Reedus) and Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) MacManus.

Although the brothers – who have been hidden away in their native Ireland (a ridiculously outdated and cliched depiction of the country) for the last decade with their hitman dad, Il Duce (Billy Connolly) – know that the murder is meant to draw them out of hiding, they are all too eager to... Interview: "Boondock Saints" director Troy Duffy

Brooke Lavalley photo
"Boondock Saints" was only marginally successful when it was released in theaters 10 years ago. But the vigilante-justice tale became a hugely popular cult film - mostly by word of mouth - on DVD.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first film and the DVD release of the sequel, "Boondock Saints: All Saints Day," writer and director Troy Duffy hit the road with stars from the films to party with the fans who made it all possible. On a stop here in Columbus, he spent some time chatting with Alive.

How did the "Boondock Saints" movies come about?

The first one was basically just a product of being your regular victim of crime, and seeing crime all around me in my community and nobody doing anything about it. And the basic feckless nature of law enforcement. There's that kind of blanket frustration that I believe every American feels.

The second one, the fans demanded it. It was kind of suggested there might be a sequel just in the basic story. But when it hit like it did ... we listened up and said... READ MORE

The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day (2009) Movie Review

Troy Duffy has been promising for years that the Saints would again come marching in, but for a while it looked like Halley’s Comet would show up before a sequel. After a limited theatrical release last fall, “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” hits wide distribution via the home video market, proving the boys are back in town-albeit in a film that focuses more on plot instead of stylized carnage. Worth the decade long wait, “Boondock Saints II” is as potent as Irish whiskey.

The MacManus brothers have retired to a quiet valley in Ireland, living the simple life of farmers. But men like these can never indulge in simple lives for long, and a brutal murder of a beloved priest brings them back to Boston to mete out bloody justice. But this is not just a simple street killing, it’s part of an elegant ... READ MORE

Inside Pulse - The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day – DVD Review

The Boondock Saints was released back in January 2000, and like many small films, it found itself only being shown on a handful of screens, and didn’t come close to earning a fraction of its production budget back. Although, some of these small films find their way to DVD shelves, and it’s there that they can flourish in ways some may have not expected given their lackluster theatrical releases. The Boondock Saints was one of those rare films that picked up a huge following, and because of the passion of the fans, and those who worked on the film, nine years later, a sequel has finally been brought to the light of day.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day takes place eight years after the first film ends, and we find the brothers, Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) back in Ireland with their father (Billy Connelly). The three have set up what seems to be a peaceful life... READ MORE

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Blu-ray Review By Peter Suciu

The Film

Usually sequels come out because a film was a smash hit in one form or another, but in this case most viewers probably never even heard of the original film. While a cult classic, The Boondocks Saints didn't exactly knock 'em dead at the box office, but that doesn't mean that this sequel requires viewing of the previous film.

The story picks up about a decade after the fraternal twin MacManus brothers (known as the Saints and played by Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery) have exacted revenge on the Boston-based mob. After a priest is murdered in a way that imitates their ritualistic style, the pair returns to Beantown for another round of vigilantism, making new friends and enemies along the way. As with the original, The Boondocks Saints II: All Saints Day is filled with... READ MORE

The 10-year anniversary showing of the film in Maine was held at Regal Cinemas in Brunswick. It was a special honor for us here in Maine to be able to watch the movie with the director, Troy Duffy, and Funny Man David Della Rocco.

This is a movie I have easily seen 50 times. Watching it in a movie theater was like watching it for the first time. There were so many little details that I had never noticed before. The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, the celebrated sequel to the cult smash original, hits DVD and Blu-ray on March 9, and we went right to the heart of all things Boondock for the goods on one of the best vigilante franchises in modern film.

It's been a decade since the McManus brothers (played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) retreated to the remote Irish coastline with their father, the infamous Il Duce, legendary assassin-for-hire. But when they learn that they're been framed for the murder of a Boston Catholic priest, the boys must return to America to not only clear their names but find the men who framed them.

We caught up with writer/director Troy Duffy, the creator of the Boondock Saints universe, to get some perspective on the film, a look inside the mind of the man himself, and a hint at ... READ MORE

First, just a little personal background: I was always a big fan of Boondock Saints, ever since I first saw it in my friend's basement. It immediately caught on with my group of friends. We rented it, having never heard of it (as I’m sure many fans did). “The Boondock Saints” Returns to Theaters For One Night

When Troy Duffy refers to his first movie, “The Boondock Saints,” he says the film “virtually” went straight to video. The qualifier refers to the fact that the director used his own money to rent out a handful of marginal cinemas so the film could have a theatrical release before slipping into video oblivion. As fans of the pulpy crime drama about two Irish brothers know, that’s not what happened.

In the decade since it was released, “Boondock” has become a cult sensation, one of Blockbuster’s highest-grossing titles ever and, with the ... READ MORE

Remembering The Boondock Saints...

The way The Boondock Saints survived a certain death, that for most films, would have buried it amongst the incoming heap of constant indie productions, proves it’s no ordinary film. In fact, and maybe more intriguing and important that the actual film, is the story behind the film. A young up-and-coming director named Troy Duffy wrote a script that was quickly shopped and put into production, only for numerous setbacks, confrontations with studio executives, and a notorious documentary that became more popular than the film, could have and perhaps should have buried the film. Alas, like the MacManus Brothers themselves, maybe some divine stepped in.
