ENVY interview with Troy Duffy and Norman Reedus
Back in 1999, first time director Troy Duffy brought the world Boondock Saints, a little movie about Irish-American fraternal twins who take it upon themselves to rid Boston of evil mafia gang members, all the while being pursued by the FBI. The film, which was an underground success through word-of-mouth, became an almost instant cult classic. Now, 10 years after the original release of the film, Boondock Saints gets its long awaited sequel. Even though Duffy has only directed two films, Boondock Saints and Boondock Saints II, both are two of the most cinematically perfect action films of its time.
ENVY had a chance to sit down with Duffy and Norman Reedus, who plays fraternal twin Murphy McManus, to talk about the film, the soundtrack and its die-hard fans... READ MORE

Ty Stone's Thanksgiving Rocking Eve
The country rocker has had a big '09 and is ready to celebrate Wednesday night at St. Andrew's
This past year has been great for local country-rock singer/songwriter Ty Stone. In 2009, Stone sang at Comerica Park at Kid Rock's blockbuster summer shows, he's now rocking with a new band (thanks to his "Search For The Truth" reality show which aired recently on CW 50 Detroit), and he has a couple tracks featured in the new "Boondock Saints 2" movie. But that's not all: Stone is wrapping up the last few songs on a long-awaited full-length album, too.

Pegasus News: Movie review and talent interviews: Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
by John P. Meyer
If you pay too much attention to the big picture message and philosophical implications behind Troy Duffy's script for Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, you're likely to despise the film. Unless you're an advocate of vigilante justice.
If, however, you're jonesing for a spectacularly choreographed, artfully filmed shoot 'em up in the bloody tradition of Sam Pekinpah or John Woo, you will be delighted.
As those who've seen the first Boondock Saints are aware, that film was light on female roles, but in his long-anticipated return to Boondockville, director Duffy has given filmgoers a doozy in the character of FBI Special Agent Eunice Bloom. This slinky, sexy, southern drawlin', whip smart operative is played by delicious Dexter dame Julie Benz -- though you may not recognize her in... READ MORE

Boondock Saints II Review by Alison F
As is true with much of the fan base, I stumbled across Boondock Saints in college. My fraternity regularly had 'Boondock Saints' night as part of our on-record social activities. Since my experience with the first movie generated interest in the second, I'll briefly address the appeal of the first.
The McManus brothers as regular dudes turned vigilante was an ideologically attractive premise. I loved the psychological balance between their God complex and normalcy. Smecker lent complexity and panache, Rocco lent ingenuous joie de vive. Listening to Troy's audio commentary helped me appreciate camera style and editing choices that set the look on edge. Actively addressing the question of whether or not this vigilantism is moral gave the film conversation-stimulating controversy. Guns, vendettas, and moral dichotomy... what's not to love?
And now for "All Saint's Day." The fact is, I would put the two movies in different genres. For this reason, after rolling things around a bit with friends and in my own head, I feel they are best examined separately. Boondock II took a wholly different approach, the action/thriller stance simplifying the McManus brothers and placing emphasis on the twisting and thickening plot. Such films can rarely pull off soul-searching without becoming cheesy and stilted, so I'm glad that wasn't attempted. It was nice to get some back story on how Noah ended up in prison throughout the childhood of his sons. I was a bit confused by the Rocco Epiphany after (someone's) death - the point seemed to change at least twice. Are we building an empire? Re-affirming the Saints' mission, despite necessary casualties? (probably the winner), Are Boston skyscrapers pretty? What defines masculinity, anyway? ... You kind of lost me. On the other end of the spectrum, the Chinese heroin scene was the first that told me "Yeah, I'm definitely watching Boondock Saints 2." Interaction between brothers and the brothers and Romeo were pure gold. I thought Boondock II kicked ass, pulled no punches, and rocked the action genre. New characters Eunice Bloom and Romeo were a joy, all the way. Having said that I feel that those who were attracted to the quirky, gruesome comedy of the first movie may, like Romeo and me, need "a period of adjustment."
My opinion: both movies stand on strong but completely different merits. I would see each one for different reasons.
I'll close by saying I am very grateful to everyone involved in mounting a second effort and bringing the fanship another fucktastically awesome film! I will do all I can to support it.
Cheers,
Alison F

VIDEO: Troy Duffy and Norman Reedus
Troy Duffy’s 1999 film “The Boondock Saints” went from a troubled production that was only released in a handful of theaters to a cult phenomenon that sold over $100 million on home video, developing a fan base that borders on the fanatical. Red Carpet Crash hosted the Southwest premiere of the film’s long-awaited sequel, “The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day,” then had a chance to sit down with Duffy and actor Norman Reedus to talk about the film, its fans, and the Dallas reaction... JoBlo Review: Boondock Saints 2
PLOT: Ten years later, the boys are back in town. When a priest is killed and the boys are framed, they do exactly what the bad guys expect… the MacManus brothers come out of hiding and head back to Boston. Once there, they meet a Hispanic fellow named Romeo, and find some help where they least expect it. As they begin the hunt, the boys find themselves hunted as well. This is exactly what fans of The Boondock Saints would expect from Troy Duffy, a tongue-in-cheek bit of action and bloodshed that refuses to take itself too seriously.

Movie Geek Feed: MGF Attends The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Screening Event
It’s been 10 years since the release of Boondock Saints in 1999. It had a limited theatrical release at the time of the Columbine incident and it didn’t help the film featured trench coat gunman on a killing spree. The film quickly disappeared. It was the word of mouth and fan enthusiasm that helped bring the film to home video. It quickly became a top rental and DVD sales continue to this day.
It’s no wonder that the original film's fan base was so psyched when word of a sequel was in the works. The internet was abuzz with the... READ MORE

Face it: Sequels suck. Troy Duffy is here to prove us wrong with his highly anticipated sequel to one of the biggest cult movies of all time: The Boondock Saints.
On Oct. 30 Duffy released the sequel Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day (BDS2), 10 years after the first film. The first Boondock Saints was released in 1999 in only five theaters, but has over the years grossed over $50 million in DVD sales alone. This gives new meaning to cult film, riding the wave of their fans to one of the biggest selling DVD titles of all time. Boondock fans are something special to say the least.

When the Saints come blasting in
Cult classic sequel is violently fun.
By Kate Regan, Staff Writer
Erin go Bragh. The “Boondock Saints” sequel has finally arrived in theaters and is stunning audiences all over Orange County.
The original “Boondock Saints” tells the story of two Irish immigrants who are stong in their faith and the rules of God. The two men are soon called to arms to eradicate the filthy criminals of South Boston.
The film is an action-packed adventure in which two religious men do their duty by executing the criminals of their city by teaming up with a mafia package boy to clean things up.
That was the first “Boondock Saints.” Its sequel, “All Saints Day,” takes the action up to the next level. There is murder, comedy, a strong sense of moral values and most of all, faith.
Before the so-called saints send a criminal to their maker, they say a prayer. Afterward, they put pennies on the eyes of the dead and cross the criminal’s arms over their chest.
This is what makes each of these movies powerful in every sense of the word. The sense of... READ MORE

From Exeter to 'Boondocks' by Seacoast Online
Writer/director of cult fave finds vindication in success of second 'Saints' film
"Boondock Saints" maverick Troy Duffy, 38, is a man of two worlds.
There's the son of a Harvard-educated English teacher who raised his five children to give book reports on the classics.
This Troy Duffy won writing awards from Shel Silverstein, as well as other lauds his father said are "too numerous to mention," and at age 14 gave such a mature analysis of James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" it moved his father to tears.
This Troy was born in Connecticut but spent most of his youth on the Seacoast, as the family bought hotels along the New Hampshire and southern Maine coast. He attended Barnard School in South Hampton and graduated from Exeter High School while living in the family's 7,500-square-foot house in Kensington.
Two years ago Troy and his wife, Angela, were married on the grounds of the waterfront home his father, Robert, and stepmother, Judith Duffy, built on the edge of the Piscataqua River in Eliot, Maine.

BOONDOCK FANS!
Boondock II is scheduled for wider release next week and even further the week after. Hopefully it gets to all of you. But the fans are fueling this thing. You're in control. As long as you guys keep showing up to the theaters it is presently in, it will spread like a virus. To the fans that "have" and "are currently" showing up, thanks. The fate of the rest of the flock is in your hands!
At this point with all the fan screenings I have attended with various cast members I have gotten to see this thing with about 3,000 fans, all in. Reactions have been off the charts. Personally, I'm a VERY proud Pappa. Victory is ours!
I know this does little to satisfy those of you who want to see it now and can't but patience, Grasshopper, patience...T.Duff

Boondock Saints II All Saints Day Review by Critique This
Alright, It's a sad day when a person is driven absolutely to the brink, but it's also rather poetically just for the review I am about to give. Critics all over the world have joined together in some sort of Neo-Nazi ridiculous cult group where if a movie isn't The Stepford Wives, it's crap. This is not the case. I have spent the last few days listening to critics from EVERYWHERE crack their 'almighty whip' down hard onto the backs of Troy Duffy, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Norman Reedus. I am tired of this. So, as in true Boondock Saints Fan fashion, I'm doing something about it. Now, yes this is my first review, and most people out there will begin to complain immediately. "You don't have the credentials to do a review, you can't be a critic!", Wrong. I have had three plus years in the training of Interactive Media [That's film and t.v. children], and more than five years in writing and commercial literature. So, if that's not good enough for you, please discontinue reading from here on out. Now, I'm..going to give the review that I believe should have been given from the very start. Boondock Saints II is a sequel from the original Boondock Saints made in 1999, it returns to follow the MacManus brothers who are in submission from their brief reign of taking out all of South Boston's scum. The movie really ... READ MORE

Well, I’m not going to say what exactly went down, but I did get to see the premiere of All Saints Day this week and it was friggin’ awesome! Joining me (and 300 other people) at the premiere was writer/director Troy Duffy, along with the two stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery. They held a short Q & A session after the flick and then devoted some time to... READ MORE

Interview – Troy Duffy, Chris Brinker, and Sean Patrick Flanery of The Boondock Saints II by Reel Loop
Like many, I came to know and love The Boondock Saints through DVD (and now Blu-ray.) Browsing through my local DVD retailer, I checked out their new released and saw the film for a reasonable price. This was also at a time I had decided I wanted to be a filmmaker so I was interested in seeing obscure, off-beat films. So I purchased the flick, went home, and was instantly assaulted by all of it’s awesome. From the unrelenting action to Willem Dafoe’s outlandish performance, I was thoroughly entertained by what Troy Duffy had delivered and eagerly anticipated the sequel, which by this point in time was still rumored.
Well here we are, ten years after the first film debuted and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is upon us. While it’s been playing... READ MORE

DFW goes Hollywood
On a beautiful Thursday in November with temperatures in the mid-70s, film fans in Dallas-Fort Worth got a glimpse of what it might be like to live in Los Angeles. Besides the California-like weather, this was a movie-intensive day, with the Lone Star International Film Festival in full swing at venues throughout Fort Worth, and the Angelika Film Center in Dallas hosting the Southwest premiere of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.
For those not in know about the phenomenon of Boondock, here's a brief history: Following its limited theatrical release in 1999, this Tarantino-style gangster thriller developed a cult following on DVD. Legions of fans were telling their friends, "You have got to see this movie!"
That was how I discovered the movie. My good friend "Wheels" demanded I watch it or lose my "man card."
But even with the surprise... READ MORE

An audience with the Boondock Saints
It was a strange night at the Mall of America last evening. "Twilight Saga: New Moon" fans filled the rotunda for the appearance by Edi Gathegi and Jamie Campbell Bower. Meanwhile upstairs in the movie theater a wondrous collection of pumped-up Boondock Saints fans were howling at the arrival of director Troy Duffy and star Sean Patrick Flanery (pictured above.)
Duffy and Flanery came to introduce "Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day," and to grow the legend of one of the stranger film stories in recent years.
In case you missed it, here's the thumbnail: in the late 1990's Troy Duffy became a Hollywood hot property because of his "Boondock" script. The story of a pair of gun-toting Irish vigilantes blasting Boston baddies seemed ideal for studios eager to build on the success of "Pulp Fiction." He got a huge... READ MORE

Who is he?
If things had gone differently, Troy Duffy would require no introduction. In 1997, Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein offered the then-twentysomething bartender and aspiring writer/director millions to turn The Boondock Saints, his screenplay for a hard-boiled Boston-Irish crime flick, into a blockbuster. The movie got made, but not before the Miramax deal fell through and Duffy’s Hollywood fantasy, which included a major record deal for his band (also called The Boondock Saints), began to collapse under the weight of the director’s ego, bravado and questionable conduct. The Boondock Saints opened on five screens in 1999 and grossed next to nothing, the band’s album flopped, and it looked as though Duffy would be better known for Overnight, the 2003 documentary tracing his almost-rise and subsequent fall, than for the movie that was supposed to make him a star.
It took the DVD market and the posthumous success of The Boondock Saints as a cult hit to provide... READ MORE

"Films are made for people. They're made for viewers, not for critics."
Ten years ago, first time writer/director Troy Duffy made a small indie flick called “The Boondock Saints.” Few people saw the film during its incredibly short-lived theatrical run, and it looked certain that Duffy’s baby was doomed to the realm of obscurity. Yet somehow, despite all the tribulation, “The Boondock Saints” amassed a loyal following. Dazzled by the gun-slinging MacManus brothers, fans hungered for a follow-up, and Duffy was all too happy to oblige them. The sequel, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” hits theaters Nov. 13.
A&E sat down with Duffy and one of the stars of the film, Sean Patrick Flannery, to talk about sequels, style and cult status.

Vigilantes polish halos as Boondock Saints returns
The movie that opened small but became a cult classic gets a second stab at the big screen
The Saints are back, by populist demand.
A decade after The Boondock Saints debuted at a meagre five theatres before going on to become an unexpected indie cult classic on video, director/writer Troy Duffy said the sequel – opening tomorrow in Toronto and in Vancouver and Halifax on Nov. 20 – was a matter of giving the people what they want.

Saints star in town for special screening
After 10 years, the Boondocks Saints have come out of hiding, and Sean Patrick Flanery says all your questions about the vigilante fraternal twins will be answered in the new film.
However, if you need more answers, Flanery will take your questions after the screening of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day at 7:50 tonight at the Edwards Marq*E Theater, 7600 Katy Freeway.
Flanery, who grew up in Sugar Land and often returns to visit his parents, stars as Connor MacManus. In the 1999 film, Connor teams with his brother Murphy (Norman Reedus) to rid Boston of evil. It's a bloody job.
When the sequel opens, the violent brothers have been living undercover in Ireland with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly). The murder of a beloved priest brings the Saints back to Boston. They find a comrade, played by Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek), and dodge an FBI operative, played by Julie Benz (Dexter).

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is the much-anticipated sequel to the indie cult classic, The Boondock Saints. The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julie Benz, TV's “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!
